Read The Fine Print

Malaysian’s don’t read! Okay, perhaps we are too lazy to read. Some time ago I received a call from a customer, let’s call him Kenny. He took up life insurance from me. What happened was Kenny went on a trip overseas, tickets by none other than our very own AirAsia. Naturally, AirAsia being one of the smartest marketing company around, sold travel insurance and my friend bought it together when he bought the tickets.

Kenny’s flight was delayed due to bad weather and he called me if he could make a claim. My first answer is “should be” since that’s the main objective of travel insurance. But then again, I thought I’d better checked. Obviously that job went to me, the friendly insurance guy. I thought that taking some time to know this would also benefit me in the long run.

So I fired up my laptop and with just a few clicks, I’m on AirAsia’s site and found what I needed. The policy document Terms & Conditions. Looked through that and I told Kenny he can go submit a claim. I’m not sure whether the claim will go through because there are conditions there which I won’t know whether Kenny fulfils those or not.

Anyway, my point is this. We Malaysians don’t bother to read. Even some lawyer clients of mine don’t read their policies when I deliver it to them. Sure there are stuff on the papers which are more interesting but don’t you agree that policy documents are important enough?  What happens is we wait until something don’t work like we expect and then complaint. And this happens for credit card T&C, loans, bank account T&C.

What about your employment terms? I bet you don’t really know. There reason I say this is when I tell my clients during review to increase their medical plans after a few years, some tell me their medical coverage from their employer is unlimited! Yeah, right. And the thing is, a handful told me later, when they need to make a claim, only then they find out that there is a limit after all.

I do admit, I’m guilty of it too until recently where I decided to get “it in black and white”. And surprisingly when I asked, the other party, banks, credit cards, whatever, they are so surprised at my request. Why?
