Surviving The Recession

Change

Well, the recession has arrived. Despite what many experts said to try and keep everyone’s confidence up. Now that it is here, how do you cope in a recession? I have 6 tips that might help you not only survive the recession but thrive.

Get a new attitude

While things are not going to be rosy, I bet my bottom ringgit that you and your family won’t go hungry, still have a roof over your head, a car or two to help you get around and money in the bank. Many people don’t even have the basic necessity like sufficient food so be thankful of what you have now.

Get healthy

Well perhaps in the past you have enjoyed the malls a bit too much, why not go to the parks and get back into shape. It will definitely save you from the temptation of shopping and probably reduce visits to the doctors as well. Parks are good place to bring your family for picnics. I’m sure your kids would remember the picnic than time at the mall.

To many children today, flying a kite is alien to them. The only thing they know is computer games. Take them out, better yet, make a kite as a project rather than buy one. See below on getting creative. Let them get healthy too.

Get creative

Think of creative low cost ways to celebrate events, to make things, to decorate, to re-use and to recycle. Here are some examples. Instead of “makan” at restaurants, try a cook out or barbeque. Make your own greeting cards from old ones. If you are up to it, you can even make gifts for birthdays and anniversaries.

2008 in Review – 3 Questions

3 Questions

2008 is drawing to a close. Most people do some sort of review for the year before the new year. Over the past many years, I found that I’ve been doing such review with many tools. We came up with all sorts of tables what should be done, who to do it but in the end, we spent too much energy just to use the tools rather than implement the changes we needed.

I stumbled across this 3 questions by accident. Saw it at a customer’s office. Asking and answering these 3 simple questions, I believe you can make 2009 a better year. If you implemented the answers to these 3 simple questions well, I believe it will improve many areas of your life. Works for your office environment too. Here are they.

  1. What are the things you are doing, that you should NOT be doing?
  2. What are the things you are NOT doing, that you should be doing?
  3. What are the things you are doing well, that you need to do more?

Bank’s Responsibility?

I read the article on TheStar here where hundreds of Singapore investors were sold investors thinking they were safe investments.

Hundreds of distraught Singaporean investors flooded a park Saturday to express their anguish at losses from structured notes issued by Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. that they say were sold to them by banks as safe investments.

One of my customers here in Malaysia also bought such bonds and until now, there is no news from the people who sold him the investments. Investors are off course crying foul over what they thought they bought vs what they actually bought. It is usually when things go wrong that people start the blame game.

Phishing Scams – Don’t Fall For It

Phishing scams, don’t fall for it. Remember the first rule of making money? Don’t lose your money. I’m sure if you use the internet and email, eventually you will receive emails like the one below.

phishingscam

Many people will just click on the link without giving it too much thought. In this case, this email seem to come from CIMB but I’ve receive from other banks as well.

What makes this email seem so authentic is the way the phisers put CIMB, highlighted in yellow. However when you look closer, you can see the email was sent out from a site I underlined in red. I’m sure banks or any financial institution will not send out emails from a different server.

So, the next time when you get such an email, you’ll know it is a scam. Delete it immediately and don’t even click on the links. Some emails have been known to carry virus that is downloaded just by clicking on such links. So remember, don’t fall for phishing scams.

The Worst Of Times, The Best Of Times

lightbulbThe news all around us paints a picture that is not too encouraging. In Malaysia and world wide inflation, record high fuel prices, sub prime crisis and shares prices taking a dive are making many cautious with their money. You too should be cautious with your money but don’t go overboard and don’t panic.

For many years, my wife and I have choose to live a simple life. Not a deprived life, mind you. We go for our vacations overseas (where the currency don’t make us poor people the minute we step out of the plane), we do have special occasions where we eat in nice restaurants and enjoy premium ice cream every few months.

By simple, we choose not to accumulate too many things around us. When we go for vacations, we don’t cart everything back because it is “cheap”. We buy things to give away at Christmas and for birthdays etc. And when we go to the shopping mall, we buy things we need usually to replace things that broke. Even then, more things are creeping into the house and the cupboards are getting full. [Read more →]
